How to? - Restart
07:00 Wednesday 16 September 2009
As part of our effort to republish the most useful articles over the last year, we thought we would remind new players of some of the cool features that have been added to the game.

Did you know we have added the ability for you to restart your current or last played event?

You can access this handy option direct from your Easy Drive.

1. During an event (or immediately after finishing)
2. Press ‘Right' on the D-Pad to call up the Easy Drive Menu
3. The first option is ‘Restart Current Event'
4. Press Right to select this
5. Then down, and right to select ‘Restart Now'
6. You will now be transported back to the start line for another try at the event.

You can also access this option directly after finishing an event.  If you lose a race or miss the time on a Burning Route you can instantly try again.  Just look for ‘Restart Last Event' on the Easy Drive.  However this option is only available for a limited time after you finish an event - if you enter a junkyard or go online you will not be able to jump back to a previous event.

Professor Follett's Showtime Seminar
07:00 Wednesday 2 September 2009
Professor Follet now continues his course on Road Rules with a closer look at Showtime.

Module 9d: Showtime

As well as keeping track of your fastest time on each of the 64 roads in Paradise City, we also keep track of your most destructive Showtime score, these are called Showtime Road Rules.

Showtime is a great way to release some anger caused by crashing out during a race, or falling short of a record breaking Stunt Run score.

As it is possible to Showtime from one side of Paradise City to the other it can also be used as an alternative to driving.

Setting a Showtime Road Rule

You can start Showtime wherever you want, it is important to note that the road you start your Showtime on is the road that you are setting a Showtime score for. Showtime will continue as long as you have Boost in your Boost Bar.

diagram 1 - coloured Road Signs

Push up on the Easy-Drive to set the Road Signs to show Best Offline Showtime. If the Road Sign is silver or gold then you have beaten the par score (gold actually means you have also beaten the Time Road Rule). If the Road Sign is red then you haven't beaten the par score yet.

If you have beaten all 64 Showtime Road Rules then you will be rewarded with a very special car the Kitano Carbon Hydros Custom, which is much stronger than the standard Hydros Custom and has been fitted with Stunt Boost.

Scoring

It's easy to score in Showtime, just smash into anything that has a $ value. This includes cars, buses, signs, and Billboards. If you manage to knock a vehicle into another vehicle you will score combo points. All points you earn are shown individually above your boost bar, and as a total at the top of the screen.

Smashing into a bus will also increment your multiplier by one, this is used to calculate your final score at the end of Showtime. Multipliers are the key to getting really big scores, so always make your way to where the buses appear or are parked! Don't always try to catch up with a bus though as it is very easy to use up all your Boost trying.

At the end of Showtime the distance you have travelled away from your starting point will also be converted into a score. Extra course credit to anyone who can write in to mailbag@criteriongames.com and tell me 'What is the furthest distance possible in Showtime?'.

Boost

Showtime ends when you run out of Boost, but Boost is also used to Ground Break your car, bouncing it in a new direction. When to use boost is an important skill for Showtime and one you will only learn through practice. New players will be surprised just how far you can continue moving without using it, so don't go using it all up for a few unneeded bounces. Landing on a car or bus is usually a good tactic to conserve your valuable Boost.

Smashing anything will give you some more Boost but if you manage to smash a multiple of 10 vehicles (10, 20, 30, etc.) you will be rewarded with a massive Boost increase.

Camera

Rotating the camera to look left or right is not only usefull for spotting those elusive buses, it is also the best way to change direction. Don't try and steer your crash too much, use the camera to aim in the direction you want to travel then Ground Break.

With all the new car packs available in the Burnout Store, there are sure to be some new ways to get some big scores in Showtime. What car will you use for your next Showtime - Toys, Legendary, or Boost Specials?

Next week will be an in depth look at Bike Times and how the combined night and day Time Road Rules can be used to measure average speed. Homework for next week is to improve your combined Bike time to under 1 hour. 'How low can you go?'

Module 9c: Time Road Rules

There are 64 roads in Paradise City, and we keep track of your fastest time on all of them, these are called Time Road Rules. Time Road Rules are a great way of tracking how much of the world you have driven and how fast you are compared to your friends.

Setting Time Road Rules

To set a Time Road Rule you need to drive from one end of a road to the other quicker than its par time. The colour of the Road Signs at the top of the screen indicate which times you have beaten (see diagram 1).

diagram 1 - coloured Road Signs

Push up on the Easy-Drive to set the road signs to show Best Offline Time. If the Road Sign is silver or gold then you have beaten the par time (gold actually means you have also beaten the Showtime Road Rule). If the Road Sign is red then you haven't beaten the par time yet.

If you have beaten all 64 Time Road Rules then you will be rewarded with a very special car the Nakamura Carbon Ikusa GT, which is much stronger than the standard Ikusa GT and has been fitted with Aggression Boost.

Advanced Techniques

So now you know what Time Road Rules are and how to set them, you are going to want some tips on how to set the fastest times. Car choice is always a personal thing, and obviously faster cars like the brand new Carson Extreme Hot Rod are more likely to set faster times, but its not always that straight forward.

For instance did you know that the gravitational forces on Paradise City cause heavy cars to travel a lot faster downhill than their statistics would suggest. Some of the best cars for setting Time Road Rules are in fact Aggression Cars like the Citizen and the Inferno Van. You will need to plan your approach to a road so that it includes a good downhill stretch, and having Aggression Boost means you will need to time your Boost use and earning to perfection.

To set a fast time on one of the winding roads of White Mountain using a heavy car is not a good idea. For these roads you need a light, fast accelerating car that can hug the inside wall while drifting without losing much speed. The perfect car for this type of road is the Jansen Carbon X12, which is added to your Junkyard when you manage to land all 50 Super Jumps (for an alternate way of unlocking this car see Module 4f: Time Savers Pack).

Before our next lesson I recommend reading Modules 9d through to 9f; Showtime, Bike Times, and Todays Best. Until then I am going to use my brand new Carson Extreme Hot Rod to beat some more of The Websterhoff's times.

Back to the n00b! - Guide to Barrel Rolls
07:00 Tuesday 11 August 2009
We have many thousands of people who join our community each week and we thought we would be most helpful fellows and republish some of the useful articles for those first time players.

The Noob's Guide to Barrel Rolls

"When you've just finished a monster Stunt-Run combo session in the Quarry, and your multiplier is in the high 30s, there's nothing quite like the feeling of catching a weapons grade Barrel Roll off the Dam."

That was the wise words of Stunt-Run expert Sarge Sullivan, showing me how to Barrel Roll like a pro. "It's not risky, Soldier. Just as long as you know what you are doing."

Therein lies the rub. I'm The Noob and I have NO idea what I am doing.

I'm petrified of split ramps. There. I've said it. My psychologist always told me that the first step on the road to recovery was to voice my fear and the simple truth is that when I think of Barrel Rolls, I freeze up and start sweating. It makes me think of the first time I had to meet the ground staff on Christmas Morning or when I received the Red Ring of Death. Chilling.

So in an effort to conquer my fear, I've paid a visit to Sarge Sullivan's Stunt Run Surgery to see if there is help for me yet. And it only cost me a bargain 5 million notes.

"Listen up, Private. You just need to take it easy. Anyone can learn to Barrel Roll their car - even a Noob like yourself. Let me break it down for you."

Step One - Choose the Right Weapon

The Sarge reckons that the right car can make all the difference. For an absolute beginner like me, he suggests the Watson R-Turbo Roadster (available after 16 wins). Apparently this car enjoys excellent rotation and is very stable.

He also cautions that some cars just aren't cut out for Barrel Rolls. That explains my repeated failure in the Krieger Pioneer.

Step Two - The Approach

"Too much speed makes it really hard to line your car up correctly and will frequently end in disaster. The Sarge is the master of disaster but that is a story for another day." The Sarge is quick to point out that one mistake many Noobs make is to assume they need a huge run up.

"Observe, Soldier." He shows me his car lined up facing a split ramp. His car is stationary. I watched him accelerate from a standstill without boost and still complete a perfect Barrel Roll.

"Notice how close you can start your run-up from? From that kind of distance, it is much easier to line up on the ramp. Remember that and you will do just fine."

Step Three - Hitting the Ramp

For the perfect clockwise Barrel Roll, the Sarge shows me that you should try to hit the hatched line with your left wheels.

He does note that it doesn't matter if you are not exactly dead on. The more speed you have, the faster you will spin.

Step Four - In-Air Control

Apparently, when the Burnout Team released Ultimate, they fitted a gyroscopic device in every car.

"What this cool gadget does is it automatically levels out your car after one rotation. But if you want to do multiple barrel rolls, you can over-ride it! Keep holding in the direction you are spinning to keep the rotation going. See how many Barrel Rolls you can do!"

No thanks, Sarge. I'll stick to just the one, if you don't mind.

Step Five - Land It

Now for the easy bit. Providing your wheels are level with the ground and the landing spot is clear, you should be able to drive away. Congratulations. You have just completed one of the coolest moves in Paradise.

So that's it. With the Sarge's barking voice still ringing in my ears, I'm off to practice in my private airfield. Tell me how you get on by writing to Lord Noob at mailbag@criteriongames.com

Auntie Rich's Easter Egg Hunt Results!
10:53 Friday 31 July 2009
Hello ladies and gents! It's Auntie Rich here again with the results of my Easter Egg hunt!

We had a lot of entries, and I've been rummaging in my sack and found some people that deserve honourable mentions, as well as a winner!

Special Mention to Mark Malangit for being such a huge Zammo McGuire fan! He gave me a full biog of the character. Shame he only focussed on one Easter Egg...

Also thanks to coccola1k, SLAYER79_OFFROAD and crazybuster1for being awfully thoughtful and sending me actual screengrabs to provewhat they found, since I didn't say that was an actual requirement :-)

But the winner by quite a mile is... #drumroll#... Mr-Gord-E who found 33 references on the island. Well done Mr-Gord-E ! That's 33 of a possible 45!

Sadly there's no physical prize, except for fame and glory, but I'm sure Mr-Gord-E is quite happy with that.

Anyway, I need a lie down after all that excitement, Ciao darlings!

Auntie Rich xoxox

P.S. If you'd like us to publish the full list of Easter Eggs, please drop me a line at mailbag@criteriongames.com with "Easter Eggs" in the heading.

CONTROVERSY OVER TIME RESULTS TABLE

The Referee, interviewed exclusively here in the Weekly News, was unapologetic about the controversy surrounding the Official Time Table. He said, "To clarify, the evidence must be a photograph from Criterion Games Network or The Burnout Licence Page and you must have at least 1 hour on Big Surf Island" adding that, "The Referee's decision is final".

The Time Table - Part 1
07:00 Thursday 16 July 2009

There has been a steady flow of match reports from players this week but I have had to reject a few for clear breaches of the rules I set out. The most common offence was to fail to provide evidence of times claimed.

To be included in the table you must adhere to the rules: email your match report to mailbag@criteriongames.com with evidence of your time spent in Paradise City and on vacation on Big Surf Island. Times are to be submitted for a single platform.

drbullit leads the table with 1607 Hours - enough time to play over 1000 football matches. Paolo Maldini has now played over 1000 matches for AC Milan and Italy -  I wonder if drbullit is as good at defending himself in Marked Man as Maldini is defending football goals?

The full time time table looks like this

                Paradise City    Island
                      Hours      Hours Total Hours
1    drbullit
          1515       92    1607
2    Bob Cartman      1199       50    1249
3    WB Long
    1129       43    1172
4    Craig Dower      730        19    749
5    Gordon Elliott   653        34    687
6    Jose Perez       469        20    489
7    Vix Diesel       342        24    366
8    C Stevens        365        0     365
9    Paul Day         314        10    324
10   Joel Rutherford  300        8     308
11   Peter Hart       236        11    247

So drbullit has spent the most total hours in Paradise City and on Big Surf Island... unless you know different?

The Referee's decision is final.

Island Hit Parade!
09:00 Thursday 9 July 2009
Hi there, Dave here taking a break from Folk Music FM and standing in for DJ Atomica on Crash FM.

Today I'm bringing you the latest top 3 chart rundown of the music you've been listening to on Big Surf Island.

At number 3, with 277714 plays since the island opened are Twisted Sister.

In at number 2 with 302700 plays is the Paradise Team's favourite Avril Lavigne with Girlfriend.

At number 1, with a staggering 475677 plays is Guns N' Roses' Paradise City - you obviously can't get enough of it.

Good to see it was worth our while installing a radio mast on Big Surf Island but I'm sure you've been making your own playlists too. It'd be great to hear what what you've been listening to!
